Granola, nuts and dried fruit require different packaging barriers. Granola primarily needs moisture protection, nuts require stronger oxygen and oil-oxidation protection, and dried fruit needs controlled moisture management. For EU PPWR preparation, recyclable mono-PE pouches are a practical starting point for many dry foods, while high-barrier recyclable structures are better suited to oily nuts, freeze-dried fruit and long-shelf-life products. Compostable and kraft paper pouches may suit selected organic brands, but neither option is automatically PPWR compliant. Brands should assess the complete packaging structure, including barriers, zippers, windows, labels and inks, and verify performance through sealing and shelf-life tests.
Granola, nuts and dried fruit may all sit in the healthy snack aisle, but they do not need exactly the same packaging.
Granola quickly loses its crunch when it absorbs moisture. Nuts contain natural oils that are vulnerable to oxidation. Dried fruit can become hard, sticky or discoloured when the package does not control moisture and oxygen correctly.
For food brands selling in Europe, the challenge is now broader than shelf life. Packaging also needs to move toward the recyclability, material reduction and clearer end-of-life information required by the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, or PPWR.
For granola, nut and dried fruit brands, this means packaging decisions should begin now—but they should begin with product performance, not with an unsupported “eco-friendly” claim.
PPWR does not require every food brand to use one specific packaging material. It creates a regulatory direction in which packaging placed on the EU market must become more recyclable, use only the material necessary for its function and communicate disposal information more consistently.
The important word is complete packaging.
A pouch cannot be assessed only by its outer film. The zipper, barrier layer, adhesive, ink, window and label can all affect its recyclability and final compliance position.
This is why BioPack does not recommend describing a bag as “PPWR certified.” A more accurate approach is to develop packaging that supports PPWR objectives and then assess the finished pack according to its product, components, market and supply-chain obligations.
For many granola, dried fruit and nut products, a recyclable mono-material PE pouch is the first option we recommend evaluating.
Instead of combining several incompatible material families, a mono-PE structure keeps the main layers within a polyethylene-based system. This gives the package a clearer route toward recycling than conventional PET/PE, PET/VMPET/PE or foil laminates.
Mono-PE packaging is particularly suitable for products that need a good moisture barrier, a resealable zipper and a lightweight retail format.

At BioPack, we recommend comparing the new structure against the current package using the actual product. The most useful checks are oxygen transmission, water-vapour transmission, seal integrity, puncture resistance, filling-line performance and real shelf-life results.
The objective is not the lowest possible thickness. It is the lowest material use that still protects the food reliably.
Compostable packaging can be relevant for organic and natural food brands whose positioning and sales channels support a composting-based end-of-life route.
BioPack offers compostable dried fruit and granola packaging in formats such as stand-up pouches, flat pouches, flat-bottom bags and side-gusset bags.
Compostable does not automatically mean PPWR compliant. It also does not mean the package will break down in every environment.
Our recommendation is to treat compostability as a defined packaging system, not as a marketing adjective.
Kraft paper works well visually for organic granola, natural nuts and premium dried fruit. It communicates warmth, simplicity and a less industrial shelf appearance.
However, most paper food pouches are not made from paper alone.
They generally need an inner sealant, coating or laminated barrier film to resist moisture, oxygen and oil. The end-of-life route therefore depends on the full structure—not on the brown paper surface.

What is the best PPWR packaging for granola?
Recyclable mono-PE is a practical starting point for many granola products. Granola containing nuts, chocolate or high-fat ingredients may require a higher oxygen barrier.
Are mono-material pouches suitable for nuts?
Yes, provided the structure delivers the required oxygen barrier, seal strength and puncture resistance. High-fat nuts should be tested carefully before the material is approved.

Start with the food. Define the shelf-life risk. Simplify the package where possible. Test the complete structure before changing the claim on the artwork.
