Home Compostable vs. Industrial Compostable Packaging

Home compostable and industrial compostable packaging should not be treated as interchangeable terms.

Home composting normally operates under less controlled conditions than commercial composting facilities. Material composition, film thickness, adhesives, inks, zipper components and other parts of the finished pouch can all affect whether a complete package is suitable for a particular compostability claim.

For this reason, BioPack recommends confirming the complete finished construction, rather than relying only on the certification of an individual film layer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these bags really home compostable?

Home compostability depends on the complete material construction and the applicable certification requirements. Selected BioPack structures can be developed using home-compostable components. The exact material and supporting certification should be confirmed for the final pouch specification.

Is a home compostable bag the same as a biodegradable bag?

Not necessarily. "Biodegradable" is a broad description and does not by itself define the conditions or timeframe under which a material breaks down. For procurement and packaging claims, we recommend specifying the required composting environment and applicable certification instead of relying only on the word biodegradable.

Are home compostable bags plastic-free?

Not necessarily. Some compostable flexible packaging uses bio-based or compostable polymers. If your project specifically requires plastic-free packaging, tell us at the beginning of development so the complete material structure can be evaluated separately.

Can home compostable pouches provide a high barrier?

Selected structures can provide useful oxygen, moisture and aroma protection, but barrier performance varies by construction. For sensitive products, provide your required shelf life or OTR/WVTR specification so we can recommend a suitable material.

Can I customize the pouch size and printing?

Yes. Size, artwork, color, pouch format and many functional features can be customized according to production feasibility and material requirements.

What is the MOQ?

Selected digitally printed projects can typically start from around 1,000 pieces, while gravure printing and some specialized compostable structures may require higher quantities. Final MOQ depends on size, material and artwork.

Can you make home compostable coffee bags with a valve?

Selected compostable coffee pouch projects can be developed with one-way degassing valves. The valve, zipper, films and other components should be reviewed together when a specific compostability claim is required.
