What Are Biodegradable Stand Up Pouches?

Biodegradable stand up pouches are flexible packaging designed using materials intended to break down under defined environmental conditions.

For packaging buyers, however, the terms biodegradable and compostable should not automatically be treated as identical.

A pouch described as compostable normally needs to meet specific compostability requirements under defined conditions, while the broader term biodegradable does not by itself explain:

• how quickly the material breaks down

• under which conditions degradation occurs

• whether industrial composting is required

• whether the complete finished pouch is covered

• whether the zipper, coating or adhesive has the same end-of-life properties
