Compostable Cold Seal Packaging Film for Popsicles

BioPack manufactures custom compostable cold seal packaging film for popsicles, ice pops, frozen fruit bars, ice cream bars and other individually wrapped frozen treats.

Developed for horizontal flow-wrapping equipment, the film uses a pressure-activated cold seal coating to form reliable seals without applying high heat close to the frozen product. The material structure, printing layout, cold seal pattern and roll specifications can all be adjusted to match your product and packaging line.

Unlike standard printed rollstock, our popsicle packaging film is developed as a complete packaging system. We review the frozen product, required shelf life, wrapping speed, sealing area, roll direction and end-of-life target before recommending a structure.

Available options include:

  • Compostable printed or unprinted rollstock

  • Registered cold seal coating

  • Transparent, white or natural-look films

  • Custom moisture and oxygen barrier

  • Matte, gloss or paper-touch finishes

  • Digital, flexographic or gravure printing

  • Custom roll width, repeat length and unwind direction

  • Trial rolls for machine testing

BioPack manufactures custom compostable cold seal packaging film for popsicles, ice pops and frozen dessert bars. The rollstock can be customized by material structure, moisture barrier, printing, cold seal pattern, roll width, repeat length, eye-mark position and unwind direction. BioPack reviews the frozen product and packaging machine before production and can provide trial rolls for flow-wrapper testing. Compostability claims depend on the complete packaging structure, including the film, inks, coatings, laminating adhesive and cold seal system.

cold seal packaging film for popsicle

Cold Seal Film Developed for Frozen Products

Popsicle wrappers are exposed to low temperatures, moisture, condensation and repeated handling throughout frozen storage and distribution. A suitable film must remain flexible, seal consistently and maintain its printed appearance without cracking, blocking or losing registration.

BioPack develops each structure according to the actual application rather than supplying one standard film for every frozen product.

Our technical team considers:

  • Product size and shape

  • Water, fat and sugar content

  • Frozen storage temperature

  • Required shelf life

  • Wooden stick position

  • Surface moisture and condensation

  • Packaging speed

  • Seal pressure and jaw layout

  • Barrier and compostability requirements

This application-based approach helps reduce common production problems such as weak seals, film breakage, roll blocking, inaccurate cutting and inconsistent pack appearance.

Why Use Cold Seal Packaging for Popsicles?

Cold seal film bonds through pressure instead of heat. The cohesive coating is applied only to the required sealing areas and bonds to itself when compressed by the packaging machine.

For frozen snacks, this offers several practical advantages.

Less Heat Near the Product

The wrapper can be sealed without exposing the popsicle or frozen bar to a conventional heat-sealing cycle. This helps reduce softening, sticking and surface damage during packing.

Efficient Flow-Wrapping

Cold seal packaging supports fast wrapping speeds because the machine does not need extended heating and cooling dwell time.

Accurate Seal Placement

The adhesive pattern can be registered with the printed artwork, fin seal, end seals and cutting repeat.

Cleaner Finished Packs

Correctly matched film tension and cold seal positioning help produce straight seals, consistent end crimps and better shelf presentation.

Custom Printing for Frozen Dessert Brands

The wrapper can be printed with brand graphics, product information and market-specific labeling.

Reverse printing can be used to protect graphics from moisture, scratching and handling during frozen distribution.

For brands launching multiple flavors, BioPack can help standardize the shared artwork structure while changing flavor colors, names and illustrations. Digital printing may suit short runs and market testing, while gravure or flexographic printing is more economical for larger ongoing orders.

Built Around Your Packaging Machine

Cold seal film performance depends heavily on the packaging equipment. Even a well-designed material may fail if the roll direction, repeat length or seal pattern does not match the machine.

Before production, we normally review:

  • Machine manufacturer and model

  • Current wrapping speed

  • Film width and repeat length

  • Core diameter

  • Maximum roll diameter

  • Unwind direction

  • Eye-mark position

  • Fin-seal configuration

  • End-seal dimensions

  • Cutting position

  • Cold seal pressure

  • Existing film sample

A machine drawing, current roll specification or short production video can help us identify potential compatibility issues before sampling.

Suitable Applications

BioPack compostable cold seal packaging film can be developed for:

  • Organic fruit popsicles

  • Juice ice pops

  • Plant-based frozen bars

  • Dairy-free ice cream bars

  • Frozen yogurt bars

  • Chocolate-coated frozen snacks

  • High-protein frozen bars

  • Children's frozen treats

  • Supermarket private-label popsicles

  • Seasonal and promotional frozen products

Different products may require different barrier levels, film stiffness and seal strength. Final validation should always be completed with the actual product and packaging line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is compostable film suitable for frozen popsicles?

Yes, provided the structure has adequate low-temperature flex

ibility, moisture resistance, mechanical strength and sealing performance. Machine and frozen-storage testing are recommended before commercial production.

Why is cold seal used for popsicle packaging?

Cold seal allows the wrapper to close under pressure without applying high heat near the frozen product. It can also improve packing efficiency on compatible flow-wrapping lines.

Can this film run on an existing packaging machine?

It may run on existing cold seal equipment if the film width, coating pattern, eye mark, repeat length and roll direction are correctly matched. We review the machine specifications before production.

Can the film be transparent?

Transparent and translucent options are available. The final clarity depends on the required barrier, material structure and compostability target.

Is the cold seal adhesive compostable?

The cold seal adhesive must be evaluated together with the film, inks, coatings and other components. It should not be assumed to be compostable solely because the base film is compostable.

Can you produce several flavor designs?

Yes. Multiple flavors can be produced using digital, flexographic or gravure printing. The most suitable method depends on the quantity and number of designs.

What is the minimum order quantity?

MOQ depends on the selected material, printing method, roll size, coating pattern and number of SKUs. Shorter runs may be possible with digital printing.

Can BioPack provide a machine trial roll?

Yes. Trial rolls are available for new film structures, new machines and customers changing from conventional plastic to compostable packaging.

Can the film meet EN 13432 or ASTM requirements?

Materials aligned with EN 13432, ASTM D6400 or ASTM D6868 can be considered. Final certification and claim eligibility depend on the complete packaging structure and applicable testing.

Can BioPack guarantee the product shelf life?

We can recommend a structure for a target shelf life, but final shelf life must be verified by the food producer using the actual product, packing process and storage conditions.
